Social Media

Seriously... what an oxymoron - social media...

Honestly, do all these media and technological tools bring us closer together?

Calm down, I'm no Luddite - I'm just asking the question.

I know proponents of social media talk about how it has the potential to bring us all together,  strengthen community, increase health and bring world peace.  Of course all this was said about nuclear energy too...

...just sayin'

Any way I was tempted to join YouTube today.  I thought what a great way to make all my videos available to my myriad of friends who can't wait to see my cat chasing a ball of thread or a voice-over a wild goose as it chases the neighbourhood kids around the local park.

Think about it, rather than inviting my best friend over to fall asleep on my couch while watching a slide show of my holidays - they can fall asleep in the comfort of their own home watching it online.

Let's face it - humanity has a proven track record.  Everything we do slides towards entertainment and trivia, self-centred competition and lust, self-serving greed.  If you doubt me consider - we have the all the technology required to feed the world...  We have the ability to grow the food, transport the food by land, sea or air and have more than enough funds to do it...  and, here we are.

I've read estimates that suggest that every 2 seconds someone dies of starvation... on our planet.

...anyway I better finish signing up for YouTube...
